Swearing off the ‘Big Box’

Posted in Thrift Shopping by Lisa Twillie on November 2, 2009

I arrived at my decision to stop buying new and to break my ‘big box’ habit while working on a project for my graduate program at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR).  While researching the big box stores (Wal-mart, Target, Home Depot, etc)…it occured to me that the only way to curb the U.S.’s ever increasing reliance on the big boxes, would be to STOP giving them my money.

It is my hope that by changing my spending habits and sharing the changes that I intend to make, will influence others to consider where they are spending their own money. If more consumers stop emptying their wallets at Wal-mart and start shopping “used”…we keep our money IN our own communities.

Jenna Woginrich in her article, “Going Vintage is Going Green”, said it best, “Man, this sure is a lot of crap… don’t we already have a lot of crap lying around? (Woginrich, 2008)”
